I say there's no such thing as age appropriate style.
Style is about personality and expressing your true self - it's knowing who you are, what you like, being comfortable in your own skin and revealing it to the world. Style is not limited by age.
Recently I was poking around Facebook and ran across an article posted by Catherine of Not Dressed as Lamb (I highly recommend her blog). She labeled the article “ridiculous” and warned her readers to “read at their own risk.”
The post was a little write up titled “24 Things Women Should Stop Wearing After Age 30” by a girl named Kallie Proverncher. I clicked over to see what all the buzz was about and was immediately greeted by this statement.
“By age 30, women are expected to be a little more mature, and they should dress like it too.”
The idea that women by the age of 30 should dress “more mature” just sounds boring and as I scrolled through the images of what was “age appropriate” for someone over 30 - I really thought aargh - boring. I’m pushing 40 and I continually break many of the rules this chick lists. I’ve included a few of them below just for giggles. (all images are from “24 Things Women Should Stop Wearing After Age 30”)
Bedazzled anything. Well I can’t say I love bedazzled everything, but I can say I absolutely love my Rock Revival jeans that are tastefully (at least in my opinion) bedazzled on the back pockets. They add an element of fun to my style and I think that bit of sparkle reflects my personality.
Really! Come on jewelry is jewelry and it’s here for us to use as a way to express who we are. Plus, in my opinion hoops are a classic. They are my go to pair of earrings when I’m running out of the house or need something simple to wear to keep the focus on another statement piece of jewelry.
It’s summer and I love heals and flip flops are cool on my feet. Plus any heal makes me feel taller, a little bit more confident, and a bit sexy. I really don’t care if they are flip flops - if they work with my outfit and the occasion I’m going to be rocking my black flip flops with sequins (I guess I’m breaking two rules with this one, ha!)
If you’re curious to find out what stupid “rules” you’re breaking head on over to her post. If you want to see some awesome responses from other stylists in their 30’s and 40’s check out these great reads!
I’d love to hear what “rule” you're breaking! Scroll down to the comments section and let the world know!
Rock on, be yourself and enjoy your personal style - whatever it may be!
I’ll see you around in my bedazzled jeans, my platform flip flops, and my silver hoops!
